WETLANDS

It seems as if the public has gotten the attention of elected officials and environmental groups about the

sewer systems of Fairhope, Daphne and Spanish Fort. It is hard to believe in 2017 that we still have regular sewer spills and that we still dump sewage into the bay.

Mobile Baykeeper awarded $87,000 grant from NOAA to expand Watershed Education and Monitoring Program

(Mobile, Ala.) – Mobile Baykeeper has been awarded a federal grant in the amount of $87,294 from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to expand its Strategic Watershed Awareness and Monitoring Program (SWAMP) into Baldwin County at Fairhope High School.

Fairhope City Council, during the last meeting Oct 9th, heard a presentation from Baykeepers involving the testing of water in 12 locations, once a week for 12 weeks. Fly Creek Watershed is one of those locations. They will probably be restricted to certain locations in the Fly Creek Watershed as land owner Arthur Corte has refused testing anywhere on his property. Lets hope they go up Fly Creek behind the Woodlands on the opposite side as Publix. They will find the creek eroding the banks and trees littered in the creek, impeding flow. They should also check out the outfall pipe from Publix that dumps directly into the wetlands.

Fly Creek has gotten little attention from authorities in the past.

During public participation of the same meeting a resident from Sandy Ford, Rock Creek area, produced photographs of the wetlands by the subdivision of Firefly. This is the same Fly Creek Watershed. The resident said she, as well as other neighbors have smelled foul odors and have seen discolored water which appeared to be contaminated. The city lift stations have also been problematic in the same area. Baykeepers was given a copy of the photoโ€™s and even acknowledged that they were familiar with the location. However Casi Callaway was too occupied with talking to the council and not the citizen complaining. These complaints have been fallen on deaf ears in the past, no city official or state agency has taken any time to answer any of the citizens complaints living in the area.

The City of Fairhope, the EPA, Jim Graves, Dept of Health, Myron Riley, ADEM Lance Leflur and the Corp. of Engineers, Glenn Cunningham all failed to follow up or contact the citizens with an explanation. Maybe Baykeepers can test that location since they have a fresh complaint and they have yet started to test any other locations. Please contact Baykeepers, [email protected]

And ask them to please test this area as well as conducting a visual inspection of the watershed by Firefly.

What a small world it is! Firefly was another Arthur Corte project with none other than Councilman Kevin Boone having an LLC related to the same project, He has dissolved the LLC since it has been exposed.

Please remind Baykeepers that many people live along Fly Creek and that the proposed apartments to be built on the banks of the creek will only add to the already existing problems with sewage, water quality and quality of life. Baykeepers has remained mute on Fly Creek and its watershed, letโ€™s hope maybe they are waking up.

Mr. Ripp my son plays in Fairhope youth soccer. The new $6 million fields aren’t level. It is sad because the council said it would be “world class.”
The kids are embarrassed by their “new” fields that aren’t even level!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I heard from a lot of people that Casi Calloway was a tiger when she was protecting the environment…..does she have a relationship with our crooked Council? So sad…..I was counting on Mobile Baykeepers but it appears that it is just a mirage.

  3. You will know when this area is trashed when the developers stop building and move on to other areas to infest. They are like locusts. The people we elect to preserve our area are the same ones cashing in at our expense. I think it is too late for Baldwin County and we are to blame for allowing these self serving people to steal our quality of life from us

I can assure you that the Baykeepers will be left high and dry if they don’t do a intense and great job regarding Fly Creek and it’s problems. This will serve as a warning to all those who have anything to do with Baykeepers. This is your last chance to make things right. There will be new people taking over should this not get handled correctly. The funds will immediately stop even before people are replaced!

I spent a good amount of time researching just who is on the board of directors of Mobile Baykeepers, past and present. It appears flush with real estate people, construction companies, attorneys that protect them all and a few impotent folks that are appointed, that mean well, thrown in the mix. Just a FYI…worth looking into that as well. Unfortunately, it appears to possibly more of the same…the board stacked with folks that do not have the citizens interest at heart.

    • Aunt Pittypat | October 12, 2017 at 9:59 am |

Sounds just like how Fairhope’s City Government is stacked. Look at all the people making decisions for Fairhope.

      • Humans are free | October 12, 2017 at 1:52 pm |

We citizens have been fooled one too many times…we elect folks that we believe will represent us…with a pure heart. We MUST NOW TAKE ANY AND ALL BLINDERS OFF! There is simply not one person on our city council that has our interest at heart…except our Mayor! And she is destroyed and choked out at every turn. ( Boy, do they have alot to hide to behave publicly they way they do. They will go to any lengths not to let information be heard, but I believe they know they are loosing their chokehold and are terrified of the consequences.)
We must verbally and forcefully stand up for Karin..now and at every opportunity we have in the future. And, there must be a way, in our bylaws, to have new elections for council members! We need to explore a legal and meaningful way to remove the parisitic slime balls and sycophants on our council! A citizen petition? A town hall meeting…not part of council meetings..all invited.. To have citizens in a think tank type environment to figure out how to get rid of them now.. Or simply attend meetings and speak loudly and over Jack..constantly..telling the truth, asking questions.. Thwart him everytime he opens his mouth. We may be arrested…GOOD! We just keep going back..getting more press..exposing them. What, are they going to arrest an entire room?? Hahahah…GOOD again! We have nothing to fear..but our cowardice in overcoming all of this. And if a Fairhope police officer commits this tragedy in front of all to see…then he or she is bought and paid for too. As for our pitiful incestuous city attorney..he MUST go as well..as soon as possible. He is part of the problem and always has been.

    • Have no fear. They don’t want to screw this one up. Not on my watch. People will be exposed and replaced as well as monies being cut off completely.

Ask yourself where did Fairhope’s 13 million for a sewer plant go? How could any reasonable person fix the plant and not the infrastructure to the plant? The sewer system in Birmingham lost BILLIONS and many went to jail. A independent forensic audit of funds and contractors involved with the 13 million dollar sewer plant needs to be done. Please remember this was on BOONE and BURREL’s watch. The same thing can be said about the soccer fields

    • Humans are free | October 12, 2017 at 6:53 pm |

Oh yes Ripp!! There needs to be an internal audit by a firm not remotely from this area…concerning ALL that has happened here over the last 20 yrs. and then a forensic accounting finding of exactly WHERE all that money went, and to who. All of the LLCs these criminals have formed and dissolved over the years needs to be researched and deeply investigated. Maybe some of the scum involved will simply resign..they have to know the pressure is building to a boiling point, to get to the bottom of all of this criminal activity. We may not know, at this point exactly who did what, and what their payoff was/is…but if they now have enough fear over being found out..they may jump ship. The spineless ones. And if anyone thinks having a crooked city attorney is ok, and literally set for life..he has been at this crap for ever.. Off with their heads!

      • Don’t forget about Baldwin County Commissioner Tucker Dorsey and all of his L.L.C.’s. Ridiculous!

    • Georgia Orwell | October 12, 2017 at 7:50 pm |

I thought it was interesting how Robert Brown was the only Council Member to postpone a vote to hire a consultant to recommend how much the City can collect for impact fees and then how the impact fees are spent. Did anyone else notice that he didn’t even get a second on his motion to delay until finally Burrell seconded for him. Then I believe that Boone jumped in to vote against Conyers and Robinson. Why does Brown not want anyone else to look at where the Council is spending the city’s money? Was this so that he and all of his developer buddies can pull as many permits as possible before we can collect fair impact fees?
How sad that Brown has turned into the biggest disappointment on the Council….I guess he and his family will be moving after he helps to destroy Fairhope.

      • Brown is a builder and he wants impact fees as low as they can be because the higher the fees the harder it is to afford to build. You did note that there is a cap on fees which means the more expensive houses pay a lower % impact fee. I was surprised Burrell voted that way. I realize many of the council votes are routine and uncontroversial but I find it amazing that Burrell and Boone have voted the same on every single issue. There has also not been a single issue where they voted on the losing side. Sometimes it’s 3-2 or 4-1 but they have been in the majority every time. It’s their way or the highway.

    Unavoidable.

  9. Rhonda Smith Hawkins | October 13, 2017 at 5:51 am |

So the soccer fields, like the sh*tty council, are not “on the level”???
Fairhope used to have a good reputation. Our brand is soiled.

  10. Rock Creeker | October 13, 2017 at 6:16 am |

So who is running against Jack? Who is gonna step up and remove the cancer?
Is there an oncologist in town interested?

    • Or perhaps a Proctologist??
      Could remove the entire Council!

    • I think that Brown is becoming even more of an issue than Jack. On Monday night, Brown was the one that refused to let the impact fee study move forward. He, Boone & Burrell clearly have an agreement to back one another up on any issue. Reminds me of junior high school girls blindly following along to be popular.

  11. The Council will not allow impact fees because they are developers. Just like the commissioners on the County. Who elected these crooks? They are robbing Baldwin County and getting away with it. If you speak up they threaten to put you in jail. Just ask Ripp. We are on a fast lane to Hell
