Monday nightโs city council meeting showed the true colors of council president โcome fly with meโ โJackโ Burrell. It was a tough night for Burrell and his faithful Bible study partner, and best friend forever, Senator Tripp Pittman.
Recently for the first time in many years Fairhope had a legitimate bid process for the emergency hurricane debris removal contract, which could bring millions of dollars to the recipient. For over ten years straight, the City of Fairhopeโ through its city council, has awarded the contract to Pittman Tractor, the private business of Senator Lee โTripโ Pittman, an elected official of this city, county and state.
City council agenda item: 6. Resolution – To Award Bid for Disaster Debris Removal and Disposal 2017 Contract (Bid No. 009-17).
How can an elected, public official bid on a municipal public contract within his own district? That is an easy answer! You have a corrupted mayor and council and a corrupted bid process. The question is: How do you break that cycle of corruption?
You elect a new mayor.
In addition to the hefty hurricane debris removal contract, Senator Pittman used his position as โtrusteeโ of the BP funds to siphon off $750,000 and then left the anchors in Mobile Bay, imperiling his neighbors in the process. He did not stop with Fairhope. Sen. Pittman leveraged his political office to obtain Baldwin County Government heavy equipment contracts as well as other municipal contracts, even though he told the newspapers and his constituents โHe only got ten percent from the illegal BP contractโ and that he would โnever do it again.โ
Please go to minutes 31 to 37 of the council meeting and listen to the mayor. Then listen to Jack. All โcome fly with meโ had to do was keep his mouth shut. Hell no! Jack Ass was full of piss and vinegar that his Bible thumping partner was not going to get the contract. Jack went on about how it was legal and the ethics commission said it was OK.
Notice Jack Ass is very good with semantics and blustering. However, he is grasping at straws. First off, it has never been ruled legal; and secondly, an ethics opinion about this contract was never issued. A new contract would require a new ethics opinion, which was not requested.

When you have a city council president argue before the citizens of the community that it is ok for an elected official to be awarded municipal contracts, then you must realize thatโs why we are dead last. Politicians like Jack Burrell and Trip Pittman are the very reasons why Alabama cannot have nice things.
To abandon all ethical standards just to give a friend and fellow elected official a contract is the epitome of corruption and public betrayal.

Mayor Wilson had the contracts re-bid with fresh eyes giving others, not elected officials, new opportunity and a fair chance to bid.
Sen. Pittman has been a poor excuse for an elected official; however, he is nevertheless a shining example of corruption greed and hypocrisy. Pittman is now making a run for the United States Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions. One of his opponents is none other than Luther Strange, the presiding Alabama Attorney general who failed to indict Pittman on the BP scandal or Governor Bentley, another criminal touting his devout Christianity.
According to Pittman, God told Pittman to run for the senate. I wonder if it was the same God who told him how to take advantage of his elected office?
The good news is it that Fairhope is already a different and better place because the old way of doing business is no more.
Also, rest assured that very soon Pittman will be using one of his publicly-rented tractors to dig a hole and bury himself neck-up, next to Jack, at the airport.
Although I watched the council meeting on Monday, I wanted to re-watch Jack’s once-again childish attack on the Mayor for no reason at all but to throw his weight around. For those who did not hear his belligerent scolding, it begins at 31.28 on the video above. And what’s with Jack’s white suit? All he needs is a bolo tie and a white Stetson to complete his ensemble. Anyway, as expected whenever the Mayor gets “uppity” and fails to “know her place” in the pecking order, he becomes agitated, talking down to her, and finishing up with a variation of his favorite put-down “Mayor, that’s enough!”. And for what? Because she calmly explained what he himself did not understand? Because she didn’t stay meek and mild as he whined about some random, unanticipated, hypothetical event that we all know he WISHES would happen so he could then say “I told you so!” I commend the Mayor for not only acting appropriately with these bids but behaving like an adult while Jack once again tried to demean her. Thank God the council meetings are streamed now so our eyes are open to what really happens. You go, Mayor. Grow up, Jack.
Because if we have a major storm, she just cost the city around $115,000, that’s why he was upset. Not to mention her not telling the council they still had an option for another year on the existing contract, which made this a big waste of time. Except for the fact that Jack hit the nail on the head, she wanted Pittman out. But hey, fresh eyes. Everyone gets a chance. Especially if you helped her get elected….Doesn’t matter HOW much it costs us CITIZENS…
Pittman is not in the business of disaster recovery; he is a full time politician. He didn’t even have time to bid on it; why does Burrell care if Pittman doesn’t? This is bizarre! And, Truth Teller, Pittman did a half-ass job with the BP clean up so why would Fairhope hire him again for anything?

Trip Pittman is not worth a darn as a full time senator. Another disgrace from Baldwin County. Both Jack Burrell and Trip Pittman were terribly upset about not getting the contract. Pittman has made millions off Baldwin County Taxpayers, while being a worthless politician. This is just the beginning of the end for fat contracts and political office for Trip Pittman. Jack Burrell is next.
Pittman didn’t even put in a bid this time, which made me think that perhaps he is counting on moving to Washington soon and leaving Baldwin County behind. Jack Burrell’s reaction and comments were shocking to me; it was a very unbecoming little tantrum by someone who should have been above such displays of temper. The Mayor did a great job getting this accomplished.
The games they play. They pray on how to be fools. Trip Pittman isn’t going to D.C. You can bet the farm on that. He’s not even in the top 3. Maybe 4th. Still bet you he will not get 10% of the total votes.
Jack Burrell does this on a daily basis and has acted in his pathetic way at EVERY meeting. Your lost if you haven’t seen him whimpering and snarling and even screaming. Disgrace.

This LLC holds the mortgage on the building her business is in, and now her residence. Very interesting.

That is very common. Most commercial property is probably titled to an LLC; anyone with common sense would do it this way. What do you find so ‘interesting’ about it?
That’s not the interesting part. What’s interesting is the LLC owns it, the business pays it rent (income) and she uses it as her personal residence. #1 – why is the LLC not listed on her public disclosure form, when she clearly receives income from it (rent)? #2 – Is she declaring the rental equivalent of the residence on her personal income taxes? #3 – As previously asked, what about the utilities? Does the business foot the bill? If yes, she needs to declare that as well.
When you have a commercial building, and you ‘sell’ part of the building as a condo, you break out each mortgage. You have to break it out in different parcels – each has its own legal description. No, it is not common. Why did she not disclose?

How are you privy to the Mayor’s tax returns? I seriously doubt that the Wilson’s are committing tax fraud; why would anyone want to stir up such a hornet’s nest by throwing around these accusations with clearly no proof?
We need to keep our eye on the ball(s): infrastructure, Fly Creek Apartments, sewage in the Bay, uncontrolled growth that is going to ruin our school system, etc. If the Mayor stays on her promises, I don’t care if she has bodies buried beneath Page & Pallette, and neither should anyone else.
She does need more experienced assistants, however; the ones that she has are going to be the end of her. If they are good enough friends, perhaps they will resign because she needs someone with political experience. Her enemies are not going away and her assistants, while well intentioned, are neither savvy nor dirty enough to play the game that is in process.

And I think the entire issue is that the Mayor has NOT kept her eye on the ball. I so agree. This was beyond bizarre. How does Jack have a dog in this fight? If Tripp doesn’t care, why does Jack? So what would happen is that as soon as a particular post started gaining “points”, the Council Clan and their buddies would rally and start hitting down down down, just because they could. I have been reading RR a while but this is my first post. The discourse has become more and more ridiculous almost every week. I am speaking to both sides of the name callers.
Now it also seems to be getting crude. I wonder how many posters are teenagers or younger because I can’ imagine grown ups being sonridiculous.
I see plenty of mistakes made by the two main protagonists, Burrell and Wilson, and regret they cannot take some of their banter private and work out some of the problems.
Frankly I think many of our problems began before this last year. The problem with the airport is we tried to be developers and buy lots of adjacent land prior to its significant market drop. Inadequate planning started the Fly Creek fiasco. I don’t know if there was corruption/mismanagement with the soccer complex, it just seems way too much money was spent on it.
Let’s try to get the conversation cleaner, not meaner. Vilifying the other side is not convincing anyone and is inaccurate. Neither side has been close to,perfect.
The whole discourse of this blog starts with the individual that publishes these outlandish claims against council members. Paul Frances Ripp or ‘administration’ sets the tone, anyone can file an ethics complaint, and he loves to do this, but if he was fair he would also ‘publish’ the results. Anyone can accuse anyone of anything, it is the proving part that makes it hard.
But I do have proof of the mayor’s wrong doing!
Anything that can be proven should be proven. That’s about the best post I’ve seen you write Jester. A whole lot more people will pay attention without all the dumbass, stupid comments that you enjoy making. I’ll back any civil post that can be backed up with facts.
